The human skin consists of 3 main layers:

The subcutaneous layer is the base of the skin and provides physical protection to the body and also serves as a nutrient deposit for metabolism.
The centre layer of the Dermis is composed of a network of elastic and collagen fibres and gives the skin its firm structure.
The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin and protects the body against damaging influences.

Functions of the Skin
Protection of the body:
The skin protects our body from loss of water and against damaging influences.

Temperature Regulation:
In connection with the blood circulatory system The skin regulates our body temperature to around 37 degrees.

Communication:
The skin signals to others how we feel like being blushed or pale. It keeps us in touch with the outside world through touch, heat, cold, pain and other sensations.

Reservoir:
The skin is an important energy reservoir for the metabolism. It contains 50% of our entire fat reserves and stores and processes other vital nutrients such as salt and water.
